Analysis of Crying Lightning video

I've chosen to analyse Arctic Monkey's Crying Lightning music video, directed by Richard Ayoade.
The video begins with a fast moving craning shot over some dimly lit water. The title of the music video lays against the water in a ghoulish-looking white sans-serif font. The font connotes that something spooky and unearthly is about to unveil. Yellow-ish clouds are visible on the water and then this is used to transition from the title to pan up to a wide shot of the band on a boat. The background is a stormy looking sky. The colours throughout this shot look slightly negative and gloomy. This adds to the whole atmostphere of the video.
A slow zoom begins as the vocals to the song kick in. The zoom comes in on Alex Turner who is stood at the front of the boat with an electric guitar slung over his shoulder. The focus then shifts from Alex as the boat sails past the camera. Nick O'Malley then comes into shot, he's sat down playing the bass guitar. The boat continues to sail on, giving a close-up of Jaime Cook's guitar before slowly zooming out so that Matt Helders, on the drums, Nick and Jaime are all in frame. The boat continues to sail out of frame.
This long take from the very beginning of the video to this moment gives the audience the chance to be aquainted with the band. The audience gets to see each band member playing along to one of their most famous songs, and gives new fans the chance to see what role each member plays.
This shot is cut smoothly from Matt hitting a specific drum to Alex on the front of the boat singing. The camera then slowly starts to crane upwards and over the boat. The colours in the sky change from a more orange-hue to a more sinister red tone. This depicts danger.
Throughout the second minute of the video, there's a quickly edited cut between each of the members to clearly show their sounds in the song as they are played. The colours in the sky change and run through the day, with rain- clearly signalling towards the storm that is evident. The colours then change to a dark, night-time colour whilst the band on the boat sail the choppy seas. The whole of this video obviously uses special-effects and CGI to create this verisimillitude. Birds are seen flying across the shot which adds to the whole look and tone of the video.
As the night becomes, lights on the boat light up and draw the attention to them. A long shot includes a full moon which also continues the ghoulish, supernatural semantic field.
A sudden high-angle shot looks down on the stormy water. In which a light rainbow is revealed and in that- appears to be Alex. The next shot shows a huge Alex emerging from the water playing the classic instrumental on guitar. This cuts back to the Alex on the boat who looks shocked and scared at the sight of this huge rockstar.
Lightning is seen illuminating the background and this fits into the title of the song and also the evident storm that has been happening throughtout the video.
Towards the end of the video, the rest of the band emerge from the water to join the huge Alex. The visual effects used here are wonderful and create a truly alien feel. Rainbows of colours surround each of the slightly transparent figures. As Matt hits the symbol a circular bolt of lightning emerges repeatedly and adds the rest of the lightning in the background.

Research into a genre

From my previous post, you can get a brief grasp of the genre of music I would like to venture into. The indie rock element is what I would like to base my video around, more specifically an Arctic Monkeys or Alex Turner song.
Below are a couple of examples of their music videos.

This music video is to a song from the first album. The song being about a prostitute in Sheffield who is being exploited by a 'scummy man'.
The music video aims to tell a raw, hard-hitting story. The vocals, of Alex Turner, that accompany the music are also quite raw and edgy which adds to the whole semantic.

For some reason, blogger won't allow me to embed another video, so I'll provide the link instead.
Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm
This music video is to a song from the second album , Favourite Worst Nightmare. This music features the band in a warehouse type space with big lights and shadows, dancers and interesting graphics. This shows a very different type of video to the one seen above.
