Research into Marketing

For my marketing research and analysis, I've decided to focus on one particular artist as they/him are going to influence the song choice I make for my music video.
I've chosen to focus on the Arctic Monkeys/ Alex Turner because I am incredibly fond of their/his work and would like to have an opportunity to create an interpretation of one of his songs.

The latest album that the band have released was in 2013 with their most popular album to date - AM.
The release of this album was crucially awaited upon by fans of the band already, and was soon to capture many more fans with its release.
Do I Wanna Know? was one of the album's most well recognised songs. It made its way to number 11 in the charts and was recognised in the charts for 64 weeks.
The music video - above was a smash hit with it's incredible fluid graphics that effortlessly encapture the whole ambience of the album.
This magazine ad to the left shows a simple and effective way of advertising their new album.
With their trademark logo at the top with their easily recognisable typeface and intriguing new graphic in the middle, all white against a pitch black background gives a very bold and stark feeling to the advert.
That same feeling is emitted throughout their marketing campaign for AM - keeping up their dark and mysterious semantic not only through visuals but through their new sound also.
The digipak for their album, again kept up the black and white theme that runs through the campaign. The seemingly effortless colourscheme and graphics/images really gives the band a brand new look, something that the fans have not seen of them before.

Research into Another Student's Work

I'm looking at David Thomas' music video as my research into another students work. I will analyse this and it will hopefully help me see the process and outcome that I am hoping for with my own music video.

30 second shot-by-shot analysis

This video opens with a long shot of a man stood up with his hands in his pockets. His costume consists of a white hate, Nike Airmax shoes, cargo-like trousers, a t-shirt and jacket. However he is in black and white. This outfit depicts casual street-wear and fits the pop-rap genre of music that they're in.
The background consists of creatively drawn scenery in which he's supposed to be. It appears to be a garage. This could suggest a very street-scene atmosphere and keeps up with their pop-rap genre. The collours consist of pink and grey and match the black and white effect on the man. There are paintstrokes and artistic movement visible as the camera slowly zooms in on him. There's a pink silouhette behind him which moves as he does, almost like Peter Pan's shadow. A very quick transition is made between this and the next shot. The transition used is almost like a wipe but uses artistic, graphic-like ways of doing this. The next shot is a mid-shot of the same man but in a different location. Keeping the tone of the video consistent. The background looks like some sort of apartments/building. Like before, there are subtle paint strokes and movements of graphics across the shots as he slowly raps along. The colours are purple and grey and keep in with the colour scheme.
The next shot is a mid-long shot and frames him at the right. The drawn background is now another different location and continues to follow the colour scheme but this time there's more white. This makes the pink strokes that move around and ontop of him much more obvious and intriguing.
The next shot is him sat down on a playfully childishly drawn bench. It appears to be a trainstation as a long shape starts to move with rectangles on it which appear to be windows. The camera slowly zooms out from this point before it cuts to another shot.
This time, there's mid-close up of the same man infront of a beautifully drawn blossom tree. The colours here consist of babe blue and a peachy orange - which are complentary and therefore very pleasing to the eyes. The camera slowly pans to the right as he raps infront of the trees and camera. This works well as he's still in black and white and creates a lovely contrast.

Preliminary Evaluation

To evaluate, I would say that we had effectively cooperated and combined our skills to produce the clip as well as we could in the given timeframe. There were minor continuity errors that in the final product weren't all that noticeable. However this task definitely gave ux the opportunity to see how difficult it can be to line up lip-syncing and how quickly edited music videos can be. This task was definitely educational and will be referred to in the making of my music video.

Prelim - My Contributions

The first day of the prelim task was planning. In which, Joelle, Ed and I quickly ran through the choreography and sorted out who would play who in the sequence. We decided that Keaton would perfectly fit the role of Chad and that Mrs Dughan would be perfect as Mrs Darbus. Us three then played multiple roles to be efficient.
During the first day of filming, I was not present due to illness, however Joelle and Ed managed to film around 80% of what we needed. They had also mananged to edit most of it aswell.
When I returned, I contributed to what was left of filming by helping with directing, looking at shot types and 'acting'. I then also helped toward the final contributions of the editing.

Preliminary Final Product

This is our final draft of our prelim task. We tried to make our video as close to the original as possible. I found that we managed to complete the task of a high quality that resembled the original closely.
There are some continuity errors in the costume and people present in the video, however for a very quick and roughly planned task, I think we did quite well.

Preliminary Editing

In editing, I was absent for the first day which meant that I had no input and Joelle and Ed got things started. When I returned, I helped to edit the last couple of shots needed into the sequence and tried to make it as flawless as it could be for a quick preliminary task.
In general the editing was completed quite quickly as it was only the first 30 seconds or so of the video.

Preliminary Filming

For filming our prelimnary task, we shot in one of the English rooms as to look as much like the room in the actual video for the hit High School Musical song.
We all took in turns behind the camera and directed eachother according to the real video. However, this did prove to be quite difficult as the task was to recreate it, shot-by-shot. It took some time to get the shots right but once we did it worked well.

Preliminary Planning

To begin preparing for our prelim task, we wrote down the list of important characters that would need to be portrayed. We then assigned ourselves the roles and decided who would be portraying who.
Next, we wrote down each shot that we would need to reenact. This was done by pausing at every shot and making a quick note of shot type and the characters seen.

Joelle will be playing the roles of Troy and Taylor.
I will be portraying the roles of Gabriella and Kelsey.
Ed will be portraying Miss Darbus and a few other smaller characters.

We will attempt to make each of the shots as similiar to the original as possible.

Preliminary Outline and Video

For our preliminary task, we'll be filming a shot-by-shot recreation of High School Musical 2's 'What Time Is It' music video. We shall only be recreating the first 1.10, otherwise it'd be an awfully long task.
Joelle Riley, Edward Barker and myself will be working together in this task. We shall share the roles of director, editor and camera operator.
